    Why we made it

A will or trust records what someone wants. It doesn't tell the people around them that it exists, where it's kept, who's named or who to call first.

Many households have some of this in place and aren't sure about the rest. In our interviews this year, 80% of families said the hardest part was knowing where to start.

    What you'll do

Answer twelve questions in four areas: your documents, decisions while you're alive, the people you've named and your accounts. Count your answers, see where you stand and choose one first action. Then fill in a one-page household snapshot to keep with your papers.

    What you'll have

A clear picture of where your plan is solid and where it has gaps, the single next step most worth taking and one page your family could actually use.

    Who it's for

Anyone planning for their own household, whether you have no will or trust yet or you signed one years ago and haven't looked at it since.

    What it doesn't do

It doesn't tell you which documents you need or whether yours are valid. That's an attorney's work. It shows you where you stand, so you can go into that conversation with the right questions.

I've been on the other side of this, working through a family member's estate. What stayed with me was how much of it came down to information living in one person's head.
