The parent conversation: talking with your parents about their plans

A free guide from Heirlūm. A first conversation about their plans, starting where they're comfortable.

Cover of The parent conversation, a free Heirlūm guide.

    Why we made it

Many adult children know their parents have a plan. Fewer know what's in it, where it's kept or what their parents would want if they ever needed help. The easiest time to find out is when nothing is pressing and the easiest way is a conversation your parent leads.

    What you'll do

Prepare for about 10 minutes, talk for 20 to 30 minutes and spend about 15 minutes afterward writing down what your parent said. The guide gives you four opening questions and four topics your parent can choose from. You aren't collecting documents or settling anything. You're starting a conversation you can come back to.

    What you'll have

Notes in your parent's own words, a date for your next conversation, and, if you have brothers or sisters, a short note they can all read the same way.

    Who it's for

Adult children who want to understand a parent's plans. Planning for your own household instead? Start with First actions.

    What it doesn't do

It doesn't ask your parent to share documents, account details or decisions they aren't ready to make. Anything legal or financial goes to their attorney or advisor.
