The yearly check-in: keep your estate plan current

A free guide from Heirlūm. Once a year, make sure the plan still fits your life today.

Cover of The yearly check-in, a free Heirlūm guide.

    Why we made it

A will or trust reflects the life someone had when they signed it. Marriage, divorce, children, a move, a new home or losing someone you named can each change whether a plan still does what it was meant to do.

Beneficiaries are the easiest part to overlook. Retirement accounts and life insurance generally pass to whoever is named on the account or policy and those names don't update when you update your will.

    What you'll do

Look at three things: what has changed in your life, whether the people you named still fit and whether your beneficiaries still match what you want. The first year takes 35 to 45 minutes. Every year after, 20 to 30 minutes, on a day you already mark, like a birthday or tax day.

    What you'll have

Either a written yes, your plan still fits or a short list of questions and who to take each one to. Over the years, the log at the back becomes a record that you've kept your plan current.

    Who it's for

Anyone who already has a will or trust. Don't have one yet? Start with First actions.

    What it doesn't do

It doesn't review your documents or tell you what to change. Each change becomes a question for the right professional.
